Thirty charities and non-profit organisations have written to the Prime Minister urging him to ensure the Renters Reform Bill is passed during this Parliament.

Signed by groups including Citizens Advice, Shelter and Liberty, it asks Rishi Sunak to deliver on his promise to ditch Section 21 evictions, or cause renters more hardship and suffering.

The letter says they are “deeply concerned about the lack of progress of the Renters Reform Bill” and points to Shelter’s research that a private renter receives a Section 21 no fault eviction notice every three minutes in England, leaving them with only two months to find another home.

It adds: “A third of private renters say, the last time they moved, it took them longer than two months to find somewhere else to live.

“This dire lack of security disproportionately impacts the people we represent. And its impacts have knock-on effects for our communities and service users beyond just their housing needs. These impacts are faced disproportionately by the already marginalised groups we represent and makes the work we do increasingly challenging.”

The Bill was introduced to Parliament in May, but the government previously confirmed that the first debate on the legislation will not take place until at least after party conference season, meaning that a carry-over motion is likely to be used to introduce it in the next Parliamentary session following the King’s speech on 7th November.

However, concerns remain that the Bill will not have time to pass through Parliament before the next election, which is expected to take place next year.
