Big Midlands town reveals selective licencing plans

mansfield

Mansfield is the latest major district council to reveal plans for a large selective licencing scheme.

It will charge landlords between £650 and £800 for a five-year licence, although the council is considering discounts for early applicants and members of recognised landlord associations.

Non-compliant landlords are to face fines of up to £30,000 and those that breach licence conditions will also face fines of up to £5,000.

The scheme will cover some 1,220 properties rented by landlords of all types other than HMOs in five areas across the town, which is the largest conurbation of its type within Nottinghamshire.

A consultation is now to be held that runs from today until the 16th December during which local landlords will have a chance to air their views on the scheme.

Deprivation

The council says it wants to use the scheme to improve the quality of properties across its private rented sector in areas which it says feature high levels of deprivation.

Councillor Anne Callaghan, Portfolio Holder for Housing, says: “We are asking tenants, businesses, and landlords for their views on a new selective licensing scheme in Mansfield.

“A key priority for the council is to ensure all our residents have a safe and suitable place that they can call home in Mansfield.

“Through this proposed scheme, we could make real changes for residents and work with landlords to not only make their homes safer but to improve the standard of living for hundreds, if not thousands, of residents.”
