A landlord has been fined for dumping piles of construction waste from his rental property on the side of a road.

Timber, mattresses, carpets, tiles, and other household waste was removed from the house in Huntingdon as part of renovation works between tenants.

Evidence from the waste pile dumped in Cottenham was investigated by the environmental crimes team and environmental health team at South Cambridgeshire District Council who discovered the owner was a landlord living in Hunstanton, Norfolk.

Contract of employment

The landlord, who the local council won't name and shame, explained that a friend had been looking after his property but was unable to provide any contract of employment or other documented proof of liability.

The landlord admitted that work had been carried out on the property and identified several items found in the waste as being from his address.

He also admitted that he hadn't made the necessary checks on the contractors regarding waste disposal. He was fined �400 with �1,000 costs.

All businesses must ensure that any contractor removing waste from a property is checked against the Environment Agency registers for authorised waste carriers, and that a waste transfer note is completed. 

Councillor Annika Osborne, member for the Cottenham ward, says: 'We are really pleased that this action has been taken in our battle to rid our communities of the eyesore of fly-tipping. We hope this court case will act as a deterrent to others to this deeply anti-social criminal behaviour.'�
