Keir Starmer got into hot water recently after saying landlords did not ‘work’ for their income, but Scotland’s housing minister has taken a very different approach.
Paul McLennan (main image, inset) told attendees at the Scottish Association of Landlords’ (SAL) annual conference at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh that landlords have the right to make a “return” on their investment and that he considers them “working people”.
McLennan, who is a Scottish National Party MSP, made the comments while answering questions from SAL chief executive John Blackwood at a recent landlords' gathering to discuss topics including rent controls and the legacy of the Bute House Agreement, which saw the SNP and Green party join forces.
The Minister has previously claimed that he wants to “reset” the relationship with Scotland’s PRS and has told landlords that they have a key role to play in solving Scotland’s housing crisis.
The gathering, which took place last week, was called Scottish Letting Day 2024 and attended by landlords, letting agents, and other stakeholders from across Scotland.
“The event was a huge success, and it was wonderful to have the Housing Minister speak directly to us,” says SAL chief executive, John Blackwood (pictured).
“We were relieved to hear that the Scottish Government considers landlords to be working people and that we have the right to make a return on our investments, signalling that the government has moved on from the days of the Bute House Agreement.
“I want to thank everyone who contributed to making our annual conference such a success and say that I look forward to us all getting back together next year.”
