Social media users have ridiculed a landlord for advertising an expensive room - but asking would-be tenants to stay out until after 8.30pm.
The room, in the South End Green, Gospel Oak area, was described on the SpareRoom site as a ‘lovely’ flat with access to a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom’, although the living room was cited as ‘not available for use’.
The live-in landlord – who has since deleted the advert after it went viral on X – was asking £1,350 a month with bills included. The listing reads: ‘I work long hours from the living room, so this area is not available for use. This space would ideally suit someone working longish hours in the city during the week and leaving the city for the weekends.’
Tenants were also asked to not return home until late. She explained: ‘I am also teaching the violin here in the evenings from 4-8:30pm Mon-Thurs, while this takes place on a different floor to the bedroom I am offering, it would be audible, so this room would suit someone who is not home until post 8:30pm.’
One person took to X to complain: “If you’re not allowed home till after 8.30 you might as well just commute 2 hours and have a 3 bed home to yourself for that price.”
Another grumbled: “Basically just wants someone to pay her rent each month but not actually live there.”
However, not everyone agreed the listing was unreasonable. One wrote: “There’s nothing wrong with putting this advert up if there’s someone out there willing to take it. I doubt there will be, but I’d just shrug and keep searching.”
