Pet-friendly homes, not rent rises are tenants biggest concern

Many politicians and campaigners have, in support of the Government’s looing renting reforms, claimed that tenants feel insecure when living in their homes and are worried about the high rents.

But a new tenant survey has revealed what most renters are concerned most and it’s a surprising one – living with their pets.

The survey among ‘Gen Z’ or 18 to 24 years-olds by rental firm UNCLE found that while just 16% of those canvassed said affordability was the key concern when home hunting for rental properties, the biggest concern – some 26% - said finding a pet-friendly home was the most challenging issue.

The poll also found that older tenants in their 40s and 50s similarly prioritised ‘pet friendliness’ over other considerations including proximity to work, good security, convenient transport links and affordable rent.

UNCLE found that many of the younger respondents overall felt lonely in their day-to-day lives particularly as home working has remained a fact following the pandemic, and animal campaigners have consistently highlighted the mental health benefits of owning a pet.

“Pets are very much a member of the family, and living with animals has considerable benefits to both our mental and physical health,” says the firm’s founder Ryan Prince (pictured).

“Here at UNCLE, we understand how important living with your furry companion is, which is why we offer a selection of pet-friendly apartments throughout our buildings.

“With the new legislation outlining more rights for renters, now is the time for other landlords to seriously consider making their accommodation pet-friendly and getting ahead of the curve, in order to meet the needs of the next generation of renters.”

The Government’s Renters’ Rights Bill, as it currently stands, will see landlords required to explain why they have refused pets within their property but also require tenants to get pet damage insurance.
