LandlordZONE is launching a new podcast to enable our readers to gain entertaining insights into the world of landlording from some of the sector’s leading lights.
To kick things off we were joined by Paul Shamplina to hear from Suzanne Smith, a four-property portfolio landlord who quit her day job as a lawyer to become a full-time self-managing landlord five years ago, more recently setting up a popular blog and podcast called The Independent Landlord.
Within it she has documented her journey from landlording as a sideline to a full-time career, and uses her experiences to inform landlords about how to be compliant, navigate the big changes that have affected the sector, choose the rights services and complete the basics including contracts, deposits and evictions.
“The properties that I had bought were near where I lived and they weren't that difficult to manage,” she says. “But then some different things came along, and I didn't understand the rules.
“So as a lawyer, I started researching them, going to primary sources and finding things out.
“And then eventually I found the NRLA and, and I joined, and I started doing content on Instagram. I have an account there called Indie Landlord and I started sharing things.
“And then I got so many messages from people asking me questions. I thought, well, why don't I do a blog? And a friend of mine had recently set one up and she said, oh, it's easy. And I thought, okay, I'll do it.”
Shamplina, LandlordZONE’s Head of Content Nigel Lewis and Smith (main image LtoR) also talk about the Renters’ Rights Bill during the podcast, during which Smith explains which bits will impact landlords the most – including how increasing rents is going to get more bureaucratic once the legislation goes live next year.
