A Labour MP has reiterated calls in the House of Commons this week for a short-lets registration scheme.
Speaking in a Commons debate, the Labour MP for Truro and Falmouth, Jayne Kirkham, said such a scheme was required to help tenants in her constituency.
She said: “The Renters’ Rights Bill will help to curtail the use of section 21 evictions to flip houses to holiday lets in Cornwall, but we still have a massive issue with second homes, and with holiday lets in particular.
“Can the Leader of the House find out what progress the Government are making on bringing in a registration scheme - or preferably a licensing scheme - for those holiday and short-term lets?”
The Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell responded, saying: “We are committed to introducing a short-term let registration scheme. I will get for her the latest estimation for delivery of that scheme.”
She added: “We are also abolishing the furnished holiday lettings tax regime. I know that both those things will be of great significance to her constituents.”
The short-term let rules were first pledged by former Conservative housing secretary Michael Gove following a consultation.
He said that those letting homes would need planning permission and promised to go ahead with a national register of short-lets landlords, along with making changes to planning regulations.
