TV pair hand out DIY advice using AI to help tenants

dick & dom

Former children’s presenters Dick & Dom have launched a mini-series using Google’s AI tool, Gemini to coach renters through simple DIY fixes.

Dick & Dom in Da Rented Flat is filmed in a flat in Bow, east London, where the pair either ask Gemini how to fix the problem, or take a picture of it to receive step-by-step instructions.

Their CBBC show Dick & Dom in Da Bungalow ran for five series until March 2006, and apart from DJing together, Dom relaunched himself as a DIY expert and his Instagram page @the_houseofwood has 233,000 followers.

Scratches

In their new series, they tackle issues such as scratches on coffee tables, melted wax and nail holes left in the wall, as Google’s new study reveals that 71% of 18–34-year-olds have lost part of their rental deposit, often for small, easily fixable issues such as scuffed walls, nail holes, or dirty ovens.

A third (33%) report losing between £500–£999, while 75% admit they’ve avoided repairs simply because they didn’t know how to tackle them.

Struggle

A quarter (25%) would struggle to tackle DIY repairs without guidance, leaving them at risk of losing money over small, fixable issues. When faced with a minor repair or cleaning job, the first instinct for most tenants is to search online for DIY tutorials (39%), while 29% would attempt the repair themselves without research, and 26% would turn to their landlord or letting agent.

Laurian Clemence, head of product communications at Google UK, says: “Gemini is particularly good at helping with DIY jobs; guiding you through what to do step-by-step, from botched paint to cracks on the wall, simply ask it what to do! It’s like having a free DIY coach in your pocket.”

Dick & Dom in Da Rented Flat launches on Instagram @DickandDomofficial on 1st October.
